Den Oscar-nominerte dokumentar­ filmskaperen David France utforsker livet til den kjente LHBT­aktivisten Marsha P. Johnson. Filmen setter søkelyset på de mystiske omstendighetene rundt hennes død i 1992 da hun ble funnet livløs i Hudson River. Politiet konkluderte raskt med at hun hadde begått selvmord. Johnson var en legende i den skeive ghettoen i New York, som sammen
med andre ikoniske transpersoner stod bak S.T.A.R (Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries) i hjertet av Greenwich Village. Johnson spilte også en viktig rolle i Stonewall­opprøret i 1969.

Regissør France følger advokat Victoria Cruz sitt forsøk på å gjenoppta saken for å finne ut hva som egentlig skjedde, noe som er med på å belyse utfordringene som fremdeles eksisterer i det skeive miljøet hun kom fra. The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson

Oscar nominated documentary filmmaker David France explores the life of famous LGBT activist Marsha P. Johnson. The film looks at the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death in 1992, when her lifeless body was found in the Hudson River. The police quickly concluded that it was a suicide. Johnson was a legend in the queer ghettoes of New York City, and had along with other iconic trans people founded S.T.A.R. (Star Transvestites Action Revolutionaries) in the heart of Greenwich Village. She also played an important role in the Stonewall riots in 1969.

Director France follows lawyer Victoria Cruz’ attempt to resume the investi- gation to figure out what actually happened. Her search helps put the spotlight on issues that still exist in the queer communities. Johnson’s struggle was a milestone in the revolutionary discussions around gender and identity, and still stands as an important chapter in LGBT history.
