God's Own Country

God’s Own Country begynner som gjørmete britisk landsbyrealisme, og utvikler seg til å bli en av årets mest romantiske filmer. Johnny er en ung odelsgutt i Yorkshire som undertrykker sine homofile følelser gjennom slåss­ kamper og drikking. En dag ansetter faren rumenske Gheorghe for å hjelpe Johnny på gården. Dermed oppstår en ordknapp romanse mellom den kjekke migrantarbeideren og den tilsynelatende livstrøtte britiske slasken.

Flere har sett likheten mellom God’s Own Country og Ang Lees cowboy­romanse Brokeback Mountain. Ingen dum sammenlikning, men regissør Francis Lee har andre mål enn å fortelle hvor vanskelig det kan være å være seg selv i et homofobt samfunn. I stedet har han laget en tårevåt og varm kjærlighetshistorie som tar karakterenes seksualitet og følelser på alvor.

God's Own Country

God's Own Country starts out with muddy British realism, and develops into one of the most romantic films of the year. Youngster and Yorkshire farmer-to-be Johnny suppresses his homosexual desires through violent outbursts and binge-drinking. One day his father hires Gheorghe, a Romanian, to help Johnny out on the farm and perhaps keep an eye on him. A taciturn romance evolves between the hunky migrant worker and the seemingly apathetic British slacker.

Many have noted the similarities between God’s Own Country and Ang Lee's cowboy-romance Brokeback Mountain, which is no faulty comparison, but director Francis Lee has other ambitions than to tell us how hard it is to grow up in a homophobic community. Instead, he has created a heart-stirring, tear-jerking love story that takes its characters’ sexuality and emotions seriously. He manages to maneuver past clichés associated with both the queer film and the romantic drama exceptionally well.
